Open House Review #2

Here’s the second of four Santa Clarita layouts that had open house earlier this year; it’s The Never Come, Never Go Railroad. Fans of Western Narrow Gauge will recognize that phrase as an aphorism for the Nevada County Narrow Gauge, which serves as the inspiration .

This layout would be remarkable for any number of reasons -- terrific modeling, luscious gardening, and great fake rock work all come to mind -- but it’s even more remarkable for being packed into a small space -- a raised island immediately behind a small patio, maybe 20’ wide by 8’ deep? When the layout couldn’t go any further horizontally, this layout was built up, against the back yard wall!

The Never Come, Never Go is a great example of how to go vertical in a small space.

Open House Review #1

We’ll start with Ray & Martie Smith’s Ray & Martie Garden Railroad . It’s located in the town of Smitty Flats, Martie will tell you with a smile - Elevation = 3 ft. ( = The height of the island ); Population = 67, although Martie thinks they may have added a few more figures before the open house.

I think that this is the newest layout in the club; and all the prouder for how much work they’ve done!

The day & night before the open houses, Santa Clarita got some unseasonably early, and heavy rain. Like several of their colleagues, Ray & Martie were out at the crack of dawn checking connections and ballast, and generally cleaning up. This would be, after all, the R&MGR’s first open house! I was thinking about all this when I asked Ray “Well, was it worth it?”

He thought about it a second, perhaps surprised by my question. Then a grin grew wide across his face and he said “Yes. Yes, I think so!”

I think so too, Ray.

Open Hous 2007 Round Up

This past Semtember the SCVGR club opened thier backyards to the community and shared thier passion for garden railroading.
It was our pleasant surprise to meet and share with so many people on that very fun day. The youngsters were in awe with wide eyes and most of the adults asked many questions, especially "How did you do that?".

Thank you to the community of the Santa Clarita Valley and people who traveled far to enjoy this great Open House experience.

If you would like more information about the club or garden trains. Please send a email to Alan @ adwright@ca.rr.com
